Lot Essay

The reverse of this coin bears the characteristic late Richard III lettering, most notably the serrated I. Only two Halfgroat reverse dies with the halved sun and rose mark are known to have been used during the reign of Richard III. This is a third die which was presumably prepared, but not put to use, prior to Richard's death.
