Originally set up back in the 1930's to build economy three-wheelers, the English Midlands-based Reliant company moved into performance car manufacturing in the early 1960's, using the then popular formula of a virtually hand-built fibreglass bodyshell wrapped around a steel chassis, the resulting confection powered by a suitably tuned mass-production engine and running gear. Their first in-house styling efforts were not entirely successful, but that was rectified with the arrival of the handsome Ogle-designed Scimitar coupe of 1964.
Things improved even more with the introduction in 1968 of the Scimitar GTE. Again styled by Ogle, a little longer and wider than the coupe, it was the archetypal three-door sports estate, subsequently copied by a string of other marques. It was provided with four comfortable seats, a large upwards-lifting rear door, was capacious, adaptable and had lost none of the flair of the Scimitar coupe. Underneath was a well-engineered new chassis with rack and pinion steering and improved suspension. As before Ford provided the engine, transmission and running gear. There was plenty of performance from the willing V6 engine, with a maximum of 120mph. The Scimitar GTE was very successful for Reliant, who produced over 5000 before they went on to develop a slightly larger version in the Series 6.

It is understood that this GTE has had two owners since it was delivered in March 1975, the second owning it since it was a month old. It is described as sound and original, other than the paintwork, which was refinished about eight years ago. The speedometer reading of 55,100 is stated to be correct. The Scimitar has been stored for the past 10 years virtually unused, but runs well despite that. It requires some attention to the body interior details and would benefit from new hood and tailgate sealing rubbers.

With the versatility of the hatchback design and the manual gearbox with overdrive, the GTE should make a good family touring car.
