The artist painted the design on each coat and took into consideration shrinkage after the cloth was stitched together. As noted in the text, the short coat was the popular style of the time. "These extravagent coats were not worn by fire fighters at work. Instead, they were worn by well-known merchants or representatives of communities when paying formal condolence visits to those affected in the aftermath of fire," p. 42.
