A French ormolu-mounted mahogany commode

Surmounted by a 'D'-shaped grey-veined white marble top with a moulded edge, the front with a large drawer centred by doves within a fruit wreath, flanked to the top and lower sections by a secret drawer, the sides each with a cupboard door centred by a foliate patera, the interior fitted with a shelf, on four paw feet

Lot Essay

This is a copy of the celebrated model by Stockel, reveneered in mahogany by Guillaume Benneman in 1786, who also made it smaller and replaced the original door with drawers. It is now in the Louvre, Paris.
