Lot Essay

Each print of the set portrays a different, modern woman engaged in an activity reminiscent of traditional ukiyo-e: reading a book, playing with a cat, drying off after a bath, combing her hair in a mirror. The Japanese police considered the images indecent and confiscated the blocks in the late 1930s.
