The case with broken arched pediment, with glazed sides, the hinged velvet covered dial with pierced brass Roman chapter ring with half- hour markers, brass pierced and engraved hands, above a plaque inscribed Pieter/Visbagh/Haghe flanked by scrolling foliage, the single barrel movement with verge escapement and outside countwheel strike on a later bell, the suspension with cycloidal cheeks, the backplate signed Pieter Visbagh.Fecit Hage, on ball feet, restorations

Lot Essay

Pieter Visbagh (c. 1634-1722) or 'Visbach' was born in The Hague. In 1646 he became pupil of Salomon Coster for a period of six years. Until Costers's death in 1660, Visbagh stays in Middelburg. In 1660 he takes over the workshop of the widow Coster. The following 25 to 30 years Pieter Visbagh is the most important clockmaker in The Hague.
