Lot Essay

The prototype of circa 1761, oil on canvas, 40.6 x 32.4 cm, is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (C.B. Bailey, Jean-Baptiste Greuze - The Laundress, 2000, p.1, fig.1), having been aqcuired in 1983. Since the present work is in reverse, it was probably executed after the engraving of 1765 by Jean-Claude Danzel (1737-1809) (C.B. Bailey, op. cit., p.22, fig.18).
