George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle, Kg (1608-70) served in the Royalist army during the early stages of the Civil War; went with Cromwell to Scotland and in 1651 became Commander-in-Chief there. After Cromwell's death Monck exercised his influence to bring about the return of Charles II, was knighted after the Restoration and made KG.
Charles II (1630-85) King of Scotland and England, eldest son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria. He died without legitimate issue, but had many mistresses and many illegitimate children, most of whom he had acknowledged and ennobled.
