A RUSSIAN SYCAMORE AND MARQUETRY OVAL WRITING TABLE
Late 18th Century
The top centred by a circle of double flowerheads on oval ground, inlaid with elongated foliate scrolls, within a broad geometrically inlaid border, the frieze with geometric inlay of lozenges and circles on square tapering legs, brass caps and castors, with Peterhof Palace original label no. '2756' and with two German customs marks, with further pencil inscription 'N872756'
33½ in. (85 cm.) wide; 28½ in. (72.5 cm.) high; 24¼ in. (61.5 cm.) deep
Provenance
Almost certainly supplied to Empress Catherine II (reigned 1762-1796)
By descent at the Peterhof Palace until sold during the 1920s or 1930s

Lot Essay

The paper label in Russian reads: 'Peterhof Palace Administration 2756' A related pair of corner cupboards of 1787 by Meyer are illustrated in Russian Furniture in the Collection of the Hermitage, figs. 76-7.
