Lot Essay

George Garrard (1760-1826) was patronised by Samuel Whitbread II (d. 1815) of Southill. He started life as a painter, specialising in animals, and was a pupil of Sawrey Gilpin. Garrard and Gilpin both worked at Southill, but gradually Garrard gave up painting for sculpture. Many of his pieces, including busts, still remain at Southill (Southill, A Regency House, London, 1951, figs. 11, 73-73, 85-87).
