T.E. LAWRENCE. Seven Pillars of Wisdom ... 1922 and 1926 Texts edited by Jeremy Wilson. Fordingbridge: Castle Hill Press, 1997. 3 volumes, 4°, printed in double columns, brown morocco-backed boards by The Fine Bindery, t.e.g. all within a cloth folding box with gilt morocco lettering-piece. LIMITED TO 37 SETS, THIS NUMBER 15 OF 20 BOUND IN MOROCCO-BACKED BOARDS.
Provenance: Blackwell's, booksellers (loosely-inserted receipt dated 27 April 1998). The first 20 sets of this edition of the text of the 1922 'Oxford' first edition (of which only six of the eight copies survive complete) were accompanied by the parallel text edition, in which the texts of the 'Oxford' and 1926 'Subscribers' ' (or 'Cranwell') editions are printed side-by-side, showing the evolution of the text. Lawrence had circulated the proofs of the 'Oxford' edition to a circle of friends which included E.M. Forster, Thomas Hardy and Siegfried Sassoon, and, as a result of their comments, had reduced the book from around 330,000 words to 'some 280,000', resulting in a text that was 'swifter and more pungent' ([T.E. Lawrence] 'T.E. Shaw' Some Notes on the Writing of the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, p.[4]). (7)
