Lot Essay

Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire was given to George, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury by Henry VIII after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It remained in the same family and the contents, amassed by the Saville family during three centuries, were sold in 1938. The Abbey was partially demolished in the 1950s while its interiors were earlier illustrated in C. Latham, In English Homes, London, 1904, pp. 201-206.
Lord Elland, after whom the room where this mirror hung was named, was the son of the 17th Century Sir George Savile, later 1st Marquis of Halifax.
