A Kholmogory walrus ivory chess set and casket, late 18th century
One side natural the opposing stained red, the figures carved to represent the Russians versus the Turks, the bishops as elephants, the stained side with mahouts climbing on their backs, the rooks as galleons, the stained king lacking head
King -- 3¼in. (8.2cm.) high; pawn -- 1 7/8in. (4.8cm.) high
The rectangular carved bone casket, with beaded and pierced borders of flowerheads, foliate scrolls and geometeric ornament, laid on foil, the interior lined divided with compartments -- 9½in. (24cm.) wide
