Lot Essay

William John Upjohn led a multifaceted life as an entrepreneur, community leader, philanthropist, videographer and university professor. His eclectic interests led him to collect works in diverse disciplines including photography. Within a few years, Upjohn had gathered many of the photographs in his vast collection and began promoting fine art exhibitions of photographs at his community art institute in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Much of his vast collection is currently located at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Christie's was pleased to offer a very successful selection from his Estate in Los Angeles on January 17, 2001.
