HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. In Our Time. Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1924. Woodcut portrait frontispiece after Henry Strater. Tall 8o. Original printed paper boards (head of spine just slightly rubbed, minor paper loss at bottom of upper joint, small, light stain to lower fore-edge of front cover); glue has rippled the front pastedown in a few spots with the resulting light discoloration on endpapers (as always); folding cloth case. A very good or better copy of the author's second book. Provenance: With the label of Toronto's "The Little Shop Round the Corner" on the rear pastedown. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 37 of 170 copies printed on Rives hand-made paper.
Hemingway was a correspondent for the "Toronto Star" newspaper, filing more than a dozen articles on the Greco-Turkish War with the paper in 1923 (some of the short stories in the present title are based on these experiences). While in Toronto he personally left copies of Three Stories and Ten Poems (his first book) and the Paris edition of In Our Time at the bookshop, The Little Shop Round the Corner, and according to Morley Callaghan's memoir, That Summer in Paris, later returned to the store with Callaghan in tow to pick up a copy of Three Stories... Hanneman A2a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 49 (describing the expanded 1925 edition, the first of Hemingway's books to be published in the United States).
