Lot Essay
This table with its inset contrasting central oval panel flanked by incut rectangular panels relates to one supplied by the cabinet-maker Henry Kettle (d.1797) to John Parker the younger, later Lord Boringdon, in circa 1775-1777, for the Saloon at Saltram, Devon. The Saltram pembroke table has incurved corners, rather than squared-incut corners, and bears the maker's label listing him as 'Upholder and Undertaker at no.18 St. Paul's Church Yard' (see C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 289, fig. 543). Another similar was sold, the property of a Gentleman, Christie's London, 11 November 1999, lot 79 (£16,100).
