North India, dated 1920
Of Ardebil design, the shaded blue field with overall scrolling delicate flowering and leafy vine around a large central panel issuing palmette pendants containing a rosette centrepiece issuing scrolling arabesques, the spandrels similar, an inscription cartouche above dated 1920, in a shaded blue border of cartouche panels containing palmettes, flowering vine and stylised cloudbands together with rosette panel between ivory cloudband and floral meander, butterscotch angular leafy meander stripes, plain outer shaded blue stripe, surface stains and slight wear

Lot Essay

The inscription, probably in Urdu, reads:
..... qalicheh az ... karkhana agra ..... sana 1920 (the carpet from ...... workshop of Agra ..... the year 1920).

It is very interesting to see this carpet inscribed as being from Agra. It is of a type, particularly with its blue wefts, that is usually attributed to Amritzar. This inscription therefore indicates that some current Amritzar attributions should be re-appraised.
