Lot Essay

This composition derives from a lost original, of which an engraving by Marieschi survives (see R. Toledano, Michele Marieschi, Milan, 1995, p. 66, no. V.9). That view was probably inspired by Canaletto's picture of the same subject in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome (W.G. Constable, no. 57).
