Manheim Galleries was founded in 1919 by Bernard Manheim. As an immigrant from Austria, he travelled to Europe and brought back the kind of furniture he loved. Manheim opened his gallery on Royal Street in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans and later was joined in business by his son Abe, who expanded the gallery next door into the magnificent former Louisiana State Bank building designed by Benjamin and Henry Latrobe in 1820. The galleries comprise twenty-six different showrooms featuring English, French, Continental, and Asian furniture, paintings, porcelain, sculpture, chandeliers and mantels.
The collection of Asian works of art is displayed in Manheim's celebrated Jade Room, which was created by Abe Manheim in the 1960's. Many of Manheim's early jade collectors went on to establish collections of world reknown. Over the past eighty years Manheim's has catered to an extensive international group of collectors, philanthropists, and celebrities. The gallery was a required visit for any collector visiting New Orleans and the selection of property offered today will continue the appeal of their collecting vision.
