Lot Essay

Little is known of Duchoiselle (including his christian name), other than that he is documented as having executed ceiling reliefs for both the Louvre and Charles Garnier's Paris Opéra in 1882. Together with its pendant of a native American Indian Brave (see following lot), the present work is what Duchoiselle is principally remembered for. A marble version of the present model, probably executed during the 1860s, was sold Sotheby's New York, 1 November 1995, lot 256. Editions in various sizes of each model were cast in bronze.
