BIBLE, Torah, Hebrew. Tikkun Soferim. Amsterdam: Leib Soesmans, 1767.

5 volumes, 8o. Finely engraved frontispieces by the Portuguese Jewish engraver Aaron Santeroos. Contemporary Amsterdam bindings, perhaps from a Jewish shop, of gold-tooled red morocco, dog-tooth roll on sides surrounding two panels of floral and leafy borders, flower tools at the angles, central ornament of massed small tools, the name of the original owner JACOB RIMINI tooled on orange inlays on front covers, the date ANNO 5543 on back covers, gilt edges (corners slightly rubbed); folding cloth case.

Provenance: Jacob Rimini, 1783: binding -- [Meyer Elte] -- [Lathrop Harper]

The editors of the text were Isaac Premsela of Prague and his son Zevi Hirsh, who mostly followed Bomberg's Venetian editions of the 1520s and 1540s. Netherlandish Sephardic bookbindings of such quality and luxury are of the greatest rarity. Darlow & Moule 5158. (5)
