THE EXCEPTIONALLY FINE HOUGHTON COPY OF GOLDSMITH'S HERALDED COMEDY
FIRST EDITION, Todd's first impression, variant C. She Stoops to Conquer was first performed on 15 March 1773. The printed version of the play was evidently altered as it went through the press, the different states of certain sheets being bound up in various combinations. The comedy centers on the misunderstandings of its principal characters, the Hardcastles, in particular Mr. Hardcastle who loves "everything that's old; old friends, old times, old manners, old books, old wine."
Roscoe Newbery Bibliography A197; Rothschild 1037; Scott, p.305; Todd, "First Editions of the Good-Natured Man and She Stoops to Conquer" in Studies in Bibliography, 1958, pp. 133-142; Iolo A. Williams, p.153 (variant 2).
