Provenance: V.N. Vitov: bookplate and blindstamp on last leaf -- Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929), founder of the Ballets Russes. After his death his library became the property of the French state; this volume then purchased by -- Serge Lifar (1905-1986), dancer with the Ballets Russes: sticker for the Exposition Pouchkine, Paris, 1937, item no. 121, on inner rear cover, signed by Lifar; sold at the Diaghilev-Lifar sale, Sotheby's, Monte Carlo, 28 November-1 December 1975, lot 582 -- [John Howell Books: description laid in] -- Haven O'More, The Garden Ltd.: morocco bookplate; sale, Sotheby's New York, 9 and 10 November 1989, lot 178 (to Quaritch)
FIRST EDITION OF PUSHKIN'S FIRST COLLECTION OF POEMS. The work collects most of Pushkin's early verse, which had previously been published in almanacs. Fekula states that some copies were issued with a portrait, although none has been traced. Fekula 5139 ("Fine copies are very scarce"); Harvard/Kilgour 878.
