HEINE, Heinrich. Buch der Lieder. Hamburg: Hoffmann and Campe, 1827.

8o. Small vignette on title. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine elaborately gilt (minor rubbing to covers and edges); slipcase.

FIRST EDITION of Heine's earliest and most important collection of poems. Although it eventually received great acclaim (and went through thirteen editions during Heine's lifetime and numerous posthumous editions) the first edition sold poorly for a decade. 2,000 copies were printed in October 1827 and a second edition was not called for until 1837. By that time, Heine's reputation as a poet, and not just a satirist, had begun to rise and the importance of the Buch der Lieder was fully established. Steinbrink, Hoffmann und Campe 1827-4; Wilpert-Gühring 4.
