Lot Essay

Shackleton sailed on the Quest in 1921 on his fourth expedition to the Antarctic, intending to circumnavigate the Antarctic continent. The Quest reached South Georgia on the 4th January 1922 and Shackleton died from a heart attack the following day. He was buried at the Whaling Station of Grytviken, South Georgia and the expedition went on under Wild's command before returning prematurely to England in June.
