THE PROPERTY OF THE LATE SURGEON REAR-ADMIRAL P. D. GORDON PUGH Surgeon Rear Admiral P. D. Gordon Pugh O.B.E., F.R.C.S., was born in Carshalton, the son of D. W. T. G. Pugh and Elaine Pugh nee Hobson a South African. He read medicine at Lancing College, Cambridge and then Middlesex Hospital, London. He joined the Royal Navy and the rose to the rank of Surgeon Rear Admiral in 1975. Admiral Pugh was a prolific collector of ceramics, especially Staffordshire portrait figures, for which he was world renowned. He amassed a large collection of the figures, the finest of which are in the City Museum and Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, where they are on permanent exhibition. In 1970 he wrote the standard work on the subject Staffordshire Portrait Figures and the Allied Subjects of the Victorian Era. Together with his wife Margery he also built up collections of Naval Ceramics, Anglo-Boer War ceramics and ceramics commemorating British Royalty. He wrote Naval Ceramics, in 1971, and had virtually completed a book on Anglo Boer War ceramics before his death in 1993 in Cape Town, South Africa. It is these three collections which are for sale.
