1951 MG TD SPORTS TWO SEATER

Red with tan leatherette interior
Engine: in-line, four cylinder, pushrod overhead valves, 1,250cc., 57bhp; Gearbox: four-speed manual with synchromesh on top three gears; Suspension: independent front by coil springs and wishbones, live rear axles with semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic drums. Left hand drive.
The overhead camshaft Midget two-seater sports models had been MG's best sellers since the pointed tail M Type appeared in late 1928, but by 1936 sales were dwindling and it was clearly time for a change. The TA Midget represented new thinking; it was slightly larger, a tad more roomy, its pushrod engine was closely related to others in the Nuffield stable. Practical and fun to drive, the T Types were a great success.
Introduced in 1950, the TD went on to international success, selling more than all other MG types put together. The mix was much as before, the shape still resolutely mid 1930s, but there was an excellent independent front suspension system, brakes were Lockheed hydraulic, and it rode on sturdy bolt-on 15 inch wheels. With longer travel springs, the ride was softer, there was again a little more space and legroom in the cockpit. But handling was as rewarding as its predecessors and with well designed independent front suspension, cornering power was much improved. The short remote controlled gear lever operated a four speed gearbox with synchromesh and just exactly the right gear ratios. Somehow, although weight had crept up, the magazine road testers found it was a little faster and no less accelerative.
This is a 1951 model TD that was repainted a few years ago and still looks extremely presentable, with unmarked panelwork and excellent chrome fittings. These include triple front spot and fog lamps and stone guard protection to the main headlights. The present owner has had the MG for about a year, during which time it has been well kept in a heated garage and displayed at a local car show. The previous owner owned the car for ten years. The interior has tan leatherette upholstery, new soft top, wood dash surround, wood steering wheel, no front side curtains and an old, probably original, tonneau cover that only just fits! The engine is all clean and tidy and we are informed that the valves and associated gaskets were re-ground and fitted quite recently. At the same time, new rear end seals were fitted, the u/j's were replaced and the brakes were refurbished including new brake lines. The tachometer has also recently been rebuilt.
The current, very friendly owner has decided to sell the MG and keep his contemporary American classic car instead. He describes the MG as a lovely car, easy to drive and deserving of a good home.
