A FINE SMALL CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
LATE 14TH/EARLY 15TH CENTURY

The domed cover well carved with a central hexagonal lotus seed pod encircled by a band of interlocking lozenge design, the gently rounded sides of the cover and box deeply carved with stylised lotus petals, the interior and base lacquered black, age cracks
3 in. (7.6 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A box of the same size and identical design is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taibei, illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Carved Lacquer Ware in the National Palace Museum, 1971, no. 20, where it is attributed to the Ming dynasty. A slightly smaller box (6.7 cm. diam.) is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Li Jiufeng (ed.), Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, 1985, no. 97.

Boxes of such designs may be found together with carved lotus trays (such as the one in lot 634), where the set forms part of the utensils used in the tea ceremony in temples.
