A RARE EARLY MING BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE TILE
ZHENGTONG

The upper surface painted in inky-blue tones with a stylised blossom of eight petals enclosed by three bands of overlapping lappets and four floral scrolls at the corners (chips)

Lot Essay

A fragment decorated with a similar lotus lappets pattern was included in the exhibition, Xuande Imperial Porcelain Excavated at Jingdezhen, Chang Foundation, 1998, illustrated in the Catalogue, p. 122, p. F19.

Compare to similar square tiles of this pattern sold in these Rooms, a pair sold, 22 March 1993, lot 713 and a single tile sold, 1 October 1990, lot 747. A rectangular tile decorated with linked circular cash-symbols was sold in these Rooms, 31 October 2000, lot 855. A quantity of ceramic tiles was commissioned during the Yongle period as part of architectural elements for temples and the building project appeared to be incomplete in the Zhengtong period during the final construction stages which included the laying of the floors.
