finely painted in watercolour on paper, a pair to the preceding lot, the elderly lady sits in a chair on a terrace smoking a hookah, a stripy carpet beneath her, gold border with coloured rules, inscribed above, mounted, framed and glazed, (good condition, negligible spotting) - 20 x 15cm.

Lot Essay

The Begum Sumroo was a dancing girl who married a German-Swedish adventurer involved in the Patna massacre of 1763. She converted to Roman Catholocism and had a cathedral built in her home town.
