Lot Essay

Late in his career, when Corot was well into his late 60's and 70's, the artist showed no signs of slowing down. The years between 1865-70 found Corot traveling from town to town stopping in Fontainbleau, Mantes, Coubron and Beauvais. During this time, his landscapes increasingly evoked a mood rather than an actual depiction of a specific location. The present composition is an example of Corot's most commercially popular works and has all the ingredients that characterize his subtle and poetic palette.

Critic René Menard insightfully commented "He [Corot] is no seeker after reality, he is a dreamer, who, through all the changing and varied aspects of nature, pursues always the same poetic, uniform note...what he sees everywhere is not what is in nature, it is what is in himself".
