Lot Essay

Corot commonly depicted life in the countryside in the early morning hours. Painted around 1860, Corot achieves a particularly beautiful atmospheric effect through his subtle blending of various shades and his attention to rich tonal contrasts. He has given a particular emphasis on the tree in the center right of the composition whose long branches dwarf the figures below.
