Lot Essay

As pointed out by E.Gemar-Koeltzsch, Holländische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, 1995, III, p.589, dated works by the artist are recorded between 1650 and 1680. The present lot recalls the signed picture of 1655, in the Rijksmuseum (E.Gemar-Koeltzsch, op.cit, p.591, no.211/3, ill.).
The dead birds can be identified from left to right: a pigeon (Columba livia), a bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), a kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and a yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella).
