Lot Essay

Gammelbo believes that the evolution of Van Schooten's composition followed the general pattern of still life painting. Thus in banquet still life's by Van Schooten, the table is represented tilted in the early paintings and less so in the later paintings. At the same time his colour range lightens. On this basis, the present lot can be tentatively dated to circa 1650.
