Lot Essay

The present lot exemplifies workshop practice in Antwerp, at the beginning of the 16th Century. Older compositions were revitalised, such as that of Rogier, whose prototype is in the Prado (M.J.Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, II, 1967, no.3, plate 6) by a Mannerist interpretation, typical of the time. The costumes of the figures are elaborate and the scene is set before a landscape background.
