Lot Essay

William Saddler practised in Dublin as a painter chiefly of small views in the neighbourhood of the city such as the four views in this and the following lot, but he also did many copies of the Old Masters. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1828 and 1833. He also taught painting and James Arthur O'Connor received his first lesson from him. Small views by Saddler such a these appear relatively often and are usually painted on mahogany panel. They were very popular with the Dublin bourgeousie.
