Lot Essay

Lieutenant James Thomas Stanton first served as a Midshipman in the Survey Ship Rattlesnake between 1849-50, but afterwards crammed for a Commission in the Bengal Infantry, receiving his appointment on the recommendation of his father, the M.P. for Stroud, and Lord Broughton. Appointed an Ensign in November 1852, he became Lieutenant in 1856, but resigned his Commission in December 1859, his Regiment, the 68th Bengal N.I., having mutinied and killed some of their Officers in 1857.
