Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Commander Walter John Fletcher was born in Chelsea, London in June 1883. Joining the Ship's Company of H.M.S. Bonaventure in May 1898, he served as a Midshipman off China during the Boxer Rebellion but by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was clearly suffering from a serious medical condition. His Service Record states that he was placed on the Retired List in March 1915 as 'Unfit (Insanity)' and that he died in May 1917.
