D.C.M. London Gazette 16.11.1915 'For conspicuous gallantry on 26 September 1915, near Hulluch. When the Machine-Gun Officer was wounded, Sergeant Hogg took charge of the Battalion machine-guns and carried out his duties throughout the operations with marked ability and great bravery. On 30 September, being in charge of a machine-gun posted on the extreme left of a gun trench, and the enemy having broken through on his left and at the same time attacked him in front from a communication trench, he opened fire, killing ten of the enemy, but, as he was being bombed from both front and flank, he was forced to withdraw his gun, which he did successfully. He brought it into action again further down the trench and continued to fight it throughout the night operations'.

Sergeant William Hogg, D.C.M., first entered the French Theatre of War in early January 1915 with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
