The rectangular top inlaid to the centre with a radiating design, within a geometric border and with foliate inlay to each corner, on a giltmetal base, with scrolling foliate and berry-cast supports and frieze highlighted with red and green paint, joined by a 'X'-shaped foliate-cast stretcher

Lot Essay

The firm of Franck was established in Antwerp during the late 19th Century. Frans Franck (d. 1932) joined the family firm and became the most celebrated member of the 'Maison Franck'. The table's trestle frame, displaying Venus-shells with Roman acanthus scrolls, relates to metal-work patterns of the 1720s illustrated in the Oeuvres, 1748 of Gilles Marie Oppenord (d. 1742). Its tortoiseshell top, with ivory ribbon-band inlay centred by a sunflowered medallion, is inspired by the veneer of 17th century Flemish cabinets and relates to that of a bureau bearing Franck's stamp (sold Sotheby's, London, 7 October 1994, lot 212.
