A George III mahogany longcase clock
William Avenall, Portsmouth. Last quarter 18th century
The hood with brass ball and spire finials to a pagoda top centred by a fretwork panel, with dentil cornices to the breakarch below, outset fluted columns with cast brass Corinthian capitals, the sides with breakarch glazed panels, with breakarch trunk door with moulded frame (some losses to top and side, replaced hinges), unusually centred by a lenticle glass, flanked by fluted pilasters with brass Corinthian capitals, the plinth with quatreform moulded panelling and on a later base, the 12½in. wide brass dial engraved with foliate scroll spandrels and with brickwork arches to the upper spandrels, silvered chapter ring, the centre with engraved figures of Harlequin and a lady with a masque flanking an engraved subsidiary seconds ring, signed William Avenall Portsmouth across the centre above the date aperture, later brass hands, the arch with a silvered border engraved with a selection of tunes (BRITONS STRIKE HOME/FOND SHEPHERD/104 PSALM/A JIGG/PATTIES MILL/A MARCH/A SONG) and with steel tune selection hand, with a painted rolling moon with silvered border giving age, centred by twin cut-out orbs engraved with mock maps, the substantial five pillar three train movement with anchor escapement and hour strike on bell to rear, with music on twelve nested bells via twenty hammers, with 8in. long pinned musical cylinder
