Lot Essay

A pupil of De Maria and Bartolini at the Academy in Carrara, Raimondo Trentanove worked in Rome with Canova. Executing portrait busts, statues, copies of Antique sculpture and of his master's work, he received a number of commissions, such as the four marble bas-reliefs for the plinth of a bronze statue of George Washington. The Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan has a bust by Trentanove of Canova, dated 1817, whilst another example of the present bust of Napoleone may be found in the Museo del Risorgimento, Faenze.
