Alexander von Minutoli was a Prussian civil servant and collector. He established the Minutolisches Institute in Liegnitz to encourage manufacturers, workers, teachers and students to appreciate high quality in the decorative arts. To this end he first circulated daguerreotype copies of works in his collection in 1848, some of which were later shown at the great exhibition in 1851. The Vorbilder was originally published as a part-work, the first fascicle appearing in 1854. The Minutoli Institute is considered to have been an influential model for the establishment of the South Kensington Museum (later Victoria and Albert Museum) in London.
