Album of 52 albumen prints. 1850s to early 1860s. Each approximately 4½ x 3½ in. (11.4 x 8.9 cm.), trimmed to ovals, mounted one-per-page. Each titled in ink in an unknown hand on the mounts, brown leather, gilt.
Album size: 11 5/8 x 9¾ in. (29.5 x 24.7 cm.)

Lot Essay

Many of the sitters in this album are from some of the most prominent Hungarian families. They seem to be members of the intelligentsia who agitated for more independence for Hungary in the mid 19th century, which culminated with the 'Ausgleich' in 1867. At this time Austro-Hungary was divided into the Dual Monarchy, the Empire of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary. The result was an independent parliament in Budapest, the Kingdom then handled its own affairs with the exception of foreign matters and war. Including portraits of future prime ministers Lónyai Menghért, Tisza Kálmán and Count Szapáry Gyüla.
