Cochrane:- "Chili". The Taking of the Fortress of Valdivia.
First news, from a letter from Lloyd's Agents, Santiago:-
VALDIVIA ...It was attacked by Lord Cochrane on the night of the 11th current, with 240 soldiers of the Chili regiment, and sailors and marines of the frigate O'Higgins, brig "Intrepid", and schooner "Montezuma". By day-light 8 batteries were carried, and in the course of the ensuing morning the town, castles, and fortresses were taken, with 116 pieces of brass cannon...This was the only point the Spaniards had left in the state of Chili... With more news from Valparaiso of Cochrane's exploits off Chili and defeat of Valdivia: ...and with his own hand planting the Chilian standard in the great square...This is, perhaps, one of the greatest feats ever performed...
