Riou was a talented Naval Officer who came to Nelson's notice but whose promising career ended when he was cut in two at the battle of Copenhagen; H.M.S. Beaulieu was built by Adams at Bucklers Hard.

Account of Ordnance returned signed by Capt. Edward Riou, later captain of Amazon at the battle of Copenhagen
regarding H.M.S. Beaulieu and dated 27th March, 1795 and 13th May following , signed lower right, now mounted on thin card -- 7½ x 8¾in. (19 x 22.2cm.)
