Lot Essay

The Roman white marble original of this vase was found by Gavin Hamilton in the ruins of Hadrian's villa near Tivoli (built in 124 A.D.) in 1771. The Earl of Warwick purchased it soon after its discovery from Sir William Hamilton and installed it in his conservatory. It is now in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow.
