In 1932, Theodore Clement, the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, asked Raymond Loewy to design a trash can for Penn Station in New York City. So began what Loewy described as 'a long series of major Pennsylvania Railroad assignments', a highlight of which was the Locomotive S1, the largest and fastest high-speed steam engine ever to be placed into service in the United States
