Lot Essay

Josef Eberz was born in Limburg in 1880 and studied first at the Kunstakademie in Munich and later in Karlsruhe. He was a member of the Novembergruppe and is today best known for the early mosaic-like oils, characterised by striking colours, which he painted between 1910 and 1920. In that decade Eberz exhibited with Galerie Hans Goltz, Munich and Galerie Alfred Flechtheim, Dusseldorf, two of the foremost avant-garde galleries in Germany of the period.
