Lot Essay

Max Sauerlandt was a close friend and patron of Emil Nolde, and he published the first monograph on the Artist in 1921. He became director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg and was responsible for the acquisition of many of their major expressionist works in the museum's collection.
